Launch of Midlands Hydrogen Ring

On the 2nd April 2008, Rupert Gammon, chair of the British Midlands Hydrogen Forum, officially launched the Midlands Hydrogen Ring. The announcement was made at a conference entitled “Hydrogen and fuel cells: for a low carbon future”, held at the NEC in Birmingham. The Midlands Hydrogen Ring is an initiative that seeks to establish a cluster of hydrogen refuelling facilities across the East and West Midlands. The configuration of infrastructure at each site is intended to be mutually complimentary, with different modes of operation being demonstrated at each. Where possible, hydrogen production for the refuellers will be via sustainable routes, for example, using power generated by wind turbines. The refueller locations will initially be at sites where hydrogen vehicle trials are taking place in relatively controlled environments, for example, at the University of Birmingham and Loughborough University. The planned roll-out of further sites includes vehicle testing centres, an airport, a visitor attraction, and eventually of course, the open road. The ring will link with hydrogen refuelling stations beyond the region, such that the Midlands will eventually become the central hub of a UK network of hydrogen highways. More info
