Comunidad de Madrid (CM) is a dynamic region in Spain having about 6 millions inhabitants with a high population density. The energy consumption in this region represents 12 % of the total corresponding to Spain, with a large impact of the transportation sector (52%) on the primary energy demand. About 2.0% of the GDP of Comunidad de Madrid is dedicated to R&D, which represents one of the highest in Spain. A high concentration of Universities, Public Research Institutions and Companies are located in Comunidad de Madrid, which explains that this region contributes with about 30% of the overall R&D activities in Spain. The Regional Energy Plan targets development of alternative fuels in transport, such as biofuels, natural gas and hydrogen. Likewise, in the Regional R&D Programme (PRICIT), hydrogen and fuel cells are topics highlighted within the Energy thematic area due to their high interest and close relationship with the transport sector, as well as for being considered clean energy technologies. In addition, a new regional Institute IMDEA-Energía, Madrid’s Institute for Advanced Studies in Energy, has been recently launched for R&D on a number of energy-related topics, including hydrogen production and fuel cells among them.
