HyER a partner in new Fuel Cell Taxi Project in London

Published on: November 3, 2011

The Intelligent Energy/Lotus London hydrogen fuel cell black cabs are to be deployed under a new European consortium HyTEC – Hydrogen Transport for European Cities, which consists of sixteen companies from five European countries and is part-funded by the FCH JU. The deployment will consist of: one new Air Products refuelling station, fifteen black cabs and five Suzuki Bergmann scooters.

The new hydrogen station will be used in conjunction with the two existing stations used to service the fuel cell buses on the RV1 route, creating the foundation of a London hydrogen infrastructure. The fuel cell taxi, first announced in June 2010 has a top speed of over 80 mph and a range of more than 250 miles has received widespread press over the last year. It was hoped that the entire fleet would be deployed in time for the opening of the 2012 Olympic Games but today’s release only confirms that some will be ready; it also does not explain how the scooters will be used.

Mayor of London Boris Johnson, who has pledged that all London taxis will be electric by 2020, comments ‘I want London to become a zero-emission city in order to deliver cleaner air and improve quality of life. It is important that London champions innovative new technologies to get us to this point, which is why I am delighted we are set to get even more hydrogen vehicles on our streets in time for the Olympic and Paralympic Games and beyond. This supports my drive to promote the uptake of cleaner vehicles such as electric cars and the new fleet of hydrogen buses running in London, which is setting industry standards.’

The HyTEC consortium will also be installing a network of hydrogen stations in Copenhagen, Denmark. The sixteen companies the consortium holds are:

Swiss Hydrogen Bus and Refuelling are “CHIC”

The region of Aargau Switzerland will demonstrate the deployment of 5 Fuel Cell Hydrogen buses in regular public transport operations under the European funded, CHIC project. Hydrogenics Corporation announced on the 25th of November the award to deliver one HySTAT(TM)60 electrolyser, capable to produce 130kg a day of pure hydrogen. It will be part of a complete electrolysis-based fueling station awarded to Carbagas, a fully owned subsidiary of the Air Liquide group. The electrolyser is expected to be delivered to the city of Brugg in the canton of Aargau, Switzerland at the beginning of 2012 for the use of the buses.
The hydrogen fueling station, delivering green hydrogen at 350bar, will be based at the PostAuto bus garage in Brugg and will be used to operate the 5 Citaro FuelCELL buses. PostAuto (www.postauto.ch) is the biggest public bus operator in Switzerland with over 2,000 vehicles in operation.
